About Madness

The ska pioneers, and possibly still the finest example in the genre, musical group Madness are a British musical institution. Having spent 214 weeks at the top of the UK chart in the 80s, there's no denying that alongside UB40, Madness were one of the most popular bands of the decade and continue to be a huge draw well into the 21st century. The reason? They're still one of the most compelling and exciting live bands on the circuit.

Tickets to see Madness guarantee a great night out, with their shows described to be as fun and energetic as they were three decades ago. Madness formed in 1976, playing to regular crowds at Dublin Castle in Camden, London. They released their debut album One Step Beyond... in 1979, which featured the titular track, as well as 'My Girl', 'The Prince' and 'Night Boat to Cairo'. Their second album Absolutely came out the following year and peaked at number 2 of the UK charts. It was two years later that arguably their most iconic track 'House of Fun' was released, which gave Madness their first number one in the UK.

Other memorable tracks over their lengthy career span include 'Our House', 'Wings of a Dove' and 'It Must Be Love'. 'Our House' was their biggest single in the US charts, which won an Ivor Novello Award for 'Best Song' in 1983. Their second Ivor Novello Award came 17 years later in 2001, for 'Outstanding Song Collection'. Madness also were given the MOJO Hall of Fame Award, a Silver Clef Icon Award in 2009 and an Idol Award at the Q Awards in 2010.

The band has endured turbulent moments, which lead to a reshuffle in the lineup. However, today six from the seven members of the original lineup perform as Madness today; Chris Foreman, Mike Barson, Lee Thompson, Graham 'Suggs' McPherson, Dan Woodgate, and Mark Bedford. The group have worked alongside other big names in the industry, such as Prince Buster, Pet Shop Boys and Elvis Costello. They popularly supported the campaign to overthrow The X Factor's string of Christmas number ones by supporting the reentry of Rage Against the Machine's 'Killing in the Name' in the charts.

Today, the band are still at it. Madness announced intimate shows in 2019 with tickets going for £2.50. They are also touring in 2020 with several dates guaranteed to transform arenas to houses of fun. Don't miss out and follow Madness on TickX to find tickets and information on shows.
