The Almeida Theatre first opened in 1980 after originally serving Islington's literary and scientific community. The venue quickly grew a strong reputation as a producing and receiving theatre. Meanwhile, the Almeida's foyer has a light and airy feeling due to its tall glass ceiling.

Owing to its fantastic productions and intimate setting, the Almeida has led it to win several awards. In 2018 the Stage Awards named the Almeida Theatre London Theatre of the Year.
