The Actors Centre started in 1978 to support actors throughout their careers. It aims to provide a space for actors to network and create, offering a programme of workshops and classes. Since 1994 it has resided at 1A Tower Street, Covent Garden after Sir Antony Hopkins led an appeal to buy the building.
Later that year Sir Alan Bates set up the Tristan Bates Theatre at the Actors Centre in memory of his late son. This 75-seater black box studio theatre now sets up curated seasons of professional work from emerging and established companies.
The Tristan Bates Theatre’s small size makes it an intimate space where artists can try out new ideas and theatre-lovers can discover new favourites. The theatre presents a diverse range of work as it focuses on providing space to contemporary, regional and international productions. It has now established itself as one of the premier Off West End theatre venues in London.
The Tristan Bates Theatre generally hosts shows with runs of between 1 to 4 weeks. That means you have plenty of time to catch a show that catches your eye. This theatre is also highly flexible, able to switch between an 'end-on' shape and L-shape depending on the show. Whatever show you're hoping to catch, rest assured that this space will surprise you.
