The Bush Theatre opened in 1972 above the Bush pub with the aim of showcasing the work of new artists. The theatre stayed in this location for almost 40 years. However, this intimate venue could only squeeze in up to 80 people. The theatre finally moved to its current location in the former Passmore Edwards Public Library in 2010.
Since its foundation, the Bush Theatre has commissioned hundreds of shows and hosts guest productions from companies and artists around the world. Over the years the theatre's shows have attracted several awards from the world of theatre. These include George Devine Awards, the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, and even a Pulitizer Prize for Ayad Akhtar's Disgraced.
The Bush Theatre has two main performance spaces. Firstly, its biggest space is its fantastic Theatre, which hosts the theatre's highest profile productions and can fit in up to 180 people. This versatile space can be laid out as a thrust, end on, or in the round stage. Secondly, the work of emerging artists and producers can often be caught in the theatre's 70-seater studio.
In addition to its two theatres, the Bush Theatre also contains an attic rehearsal space and writer's room, as well as a relaxing café bar and a beautiful garden terrace. It even hosts the largest public playtext library in the United Kingdom.
