Led by Mike Skinner, The Streets are an alternative hip-hop group from Birmingham who rose to fame in 2002 with their smash hit album Original Pirate Material. Looking to find out more about tickets for The Streets' latest tour? Read on!
The Streets first burst on the scene in 2001 with the single 'Has It Come to This?' which reached #18 on the UK charts. It became the lead single of the group's first album Original Pirate Material which came out in 2002.
Original Pirate Material captured the mood of the contemporary youth due to Skinner's punchy lyrics and social commentary. The album quickly earned critical acclaim and nominations for the Mercury Prize and several BRIT Awards. It also went platinum in the UK.
The Streets soon followed up their breakthrough album with their second album A Grand Don't Come for Free in 2004. A Grand Don't Come for Free hit #1 in the UK, going multi-platinum and spawning some of The Streets' most popular tracks. 'Fit But You Know It' hit #4 in the UK Singles Chart, while 'Dry Your Eyes' became the project's only #1 single.
The Streets stayed influential for the rest of the 2000s. Skinner released his third album, The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living, in 2006. Focusing more on Skinner's struggles with fame, it too hit #1 in the UK. It also gave rise to the singles 'When You Wasn't Famous', 'Never Went To Church' and 'Pranging Out'.
The Streets released two more albums, 2008's Everything Is Borrowed and 2011's Computers and Blues, before going on indefinite hiatus. However, Skinner returned in 2017 and has been gradually releasing new material ever since.
