Broderick plays New York astronomy teacher, Mark Williams, who’s life is on a crash-course to disaster. His marriage is on the rocks, his job is in danger and he can’t escape his own bad thoughts. He’s also a realist and doesn’t believe in any sort of divine intervention. That is until student and single mother Angela comes along… Their chance encounter has a profound effect on Mark, who consequently begins reevaluating his life.
This kind of spiritual and awakening script is nothing new to Longergan. He directed ‘Manchester By the Sea’ in 2016, which followed a man also forced to assess his situation. The film lead to an Academy Award and a Bafta for ‘Original Screenplay’. His other work included ‘Gangs of New York’, ‘You Can Count On Me’ and ‘Analyze This’. The play is the latest from the mega director as he swaps the screen for the theatre!
This production witnesses Broderick reprise his role from the Off-Broadway run in 2009. He’s best known for his role in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and the vocals to Simba in The Lion King. Despite this being his debut in London, he’s hardly a stranger to the stage, having won Tony Awards twice. Broderick starred as Leo Bloom in both the Broadway musical and film adaptation of The Producers. Oh and he’s also Mr. SJP – if we didn’t need any other excuse to get tickets to fabulous new play, The Starry Messenger.
Multi-Award nominee Elizabeth McGovern is also set to have us starry-eyed. The actress played Evelyn Nesbit in the 1981 film Ragtime. She’s also Cora in Downton Abbey, a show with plenty of awards to its name!
With a star-studded cast and crew and an uplifting tale, the play is likely to be a dazzling success. Don’t miss the chance to get tickets to The Starry Messenger and witness the magic Matthew Broderick live on stage!
