See The King And I at the New Victoria Theatre
From the titans of musical theatre, Rodgers and Hammerstein, The King and I comes to wake up Woking. The show is their fifth, deemed as the greatest from the golden age of musicals. Now on tour following a sell-out run in the West End, the award-winning production visits cities across the UK. Tickets to see The King and I in Woking are available now.
Set in Bangkok in the 1860s, the show is based on a novel by Margaret Landon. The story uncovers the turbulent relationship between the King of Siam and British governess Anna. Wanting to westernise his country, the King hires Anna as an English teacher for his family. They quickly realise that diverse traditions and culture are not easily overcome. But as conflicts grow, so does respect, and an unspoken romance is unearthed!
The musical had its first premiere on Broadway in 1951. It was highly successful and ran for almost three years, one of the longest runs at the time. The show has numerous awards, including a Tony Award for ‘Best Musical’ and ‘Best Revival of a Musical’. It later became a feature film starring Jodie Foster in 1956.
Now you can catch The King on I for yourself as it arrives Woking. The production comes from multi-award winning director, Bart Sher (South Pacific, My Fair Lady). It also features stunning costumes, bringing the lavish palace courts of Bangkok to life.
