The multi-award winning West End production of Hamilton is now entering its third sell-out year at London's Victoria Palace Theatre.
Hamilton is the story of America's Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington's right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and helped shape the very foundations of the America we know today. The score blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B and Broadway - the story of America then, as told by America now.
Winner of a record 11 Tony Awards, a Grammy, a Pulitzer Prize and seven Olivier Awards, the rapped through musical is a global phenomenon. It has a book and score by Lin-Manuel Miranda, flawlessly telling the tale of one of America’s Founding Fathers. Hamilton continues to sell out tickets and receive strong critical acclaim, hailed as a modern musical masterpiece.
The musical is based on historian Ron Chernow’s hefty biography of Alexander Hamilton. It’s the story of an orphan and immigrant, born on the Caribbean island of Nevis. A penniless Hamilton worked his way up to become George Washington’s right-hand man, influencing the America we know today. He’s the War Hero, the American Dream and the political mastermind. Hamilton’s life story is one bursting with aspiration and significant events.
Lin-Manuel Miranda read Chernow’s biography while holidaying in Mexico. Immediately, he felt inspired to transform the book into a musical. However, the award-winning creator took seven years to develop the show, but the result is magical.
The score fuses elements of hip-hop, rap, r’n’b, operetta and blues together, creating an innovative soundtrack atypical of theatre musicals. Songs like ‘You’ll Be Back’, ‘Non-Stop’ and ‘Guns and Ships’ are fan favourites, many of which feature on the cast album streamed by millions. With such originality, Miranda brings the story of America’s Founding Father into the present.
Hamilton has been incredibly popular in the US, selling out almost as soon as tickets went on sale. Its advance box office sales have broken records and overall, the musical has received 16 Tony Award nominations. The hype of Hamilton doesn’t seem to be dying down, remaining one of the most in demand shows of Broadway and the West End, earning it a place among the theatre greats like Lion King and Wicked.
