Dan Gillespie Sells and Tom MacRae’s musical is based on the 2011 BBC Three documentary ‘Jamie: Drag Queen at 16’. As a typical sixteen year old growing up on a council estate, Jamie New doesn’t quite fit in anywhere. Despite bullying, Jamie has big aspirations and an even bigger secret to share. With the support of his family and friends, Jamie overcomes strong adversary and chases after his dream. The show exposes his challenges, relationships and above all his inner strength.
The true tale of overcoming prejudice and outright fabulousness is inspirational, so Jamie had to share it. After making the documentary with Firecracker Films, theatre director Jonathan Butterell wanted to transform the narrative into a stage show. Partnering with The Feeling’s Tom MacRae, the pair began working on this remarkable and heartwarming musical.
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie premiered at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, where it won two UK Theatre Awards. Following the rave reviews, the musical now runs in London’s West End, where it scooped four WhatsOnStage awards.
